Genoa

Eventi

Historic city linked to maritime culture, commerce and industry, Genoa is now also an established tourist and cultural centre. Check out the main events in Genoa on the Calendar of Events of the municipality’s website!

Aquarium

The Aquarium of Genoa is the best known and one of the largest in Europe. The structure houses more than 6,000 specimens of different animal species in 70 tanks that reproduce marine and terrestrial environments. It’s a must see for those visiting Genoa: a magical and unforgettable outing especially for children.

Palazzo Ducale

The Doge’s Palace is one of the most elegant and majestic examples of architecture in the city centre. For centuries it has been the seat of the Doge of Genoa and within its walls you will find all of the city’s rich history. Restored a few decades ago, the building is not only historic, but it is also a centre for cultural and educational activities, and social events. The east side of the building overlooks Piazza de Ferrari, the most characteristic and best-known square of Genoa.

Porto Antico

The Old Port of Genoa is one of the most characteristic areas of the city. It was renovated in 1992 by architect Renzo Piano and is now an important cultural and tourist centre. The complex includes many structures such as the Spinola Bridge, the Cotton Warehouses, the panoramic lift (Bigo) the Neptune, Palazzo San Giorgio, the Docks, as well as bars and restaurants.

The Historical Centre

The city centre is the core of the old city of medieval origin. It spans through a picturesque labyrinth of narrow streets and alleyways called “carrugi”, full of old churches, narrow arcades and charming historical buildings. It is also a popular meeting place for university students and is considered the larges nightlife district in Genoa.

Rolli

The Rolli are the most prestigious buildings in the city. They include the buildings of Via Garibaldi, Via Balbi, via Lomellini and Via Cairoli among other famous “palazzi”. Since 2006, UNESCO has classed most of these buildings as World Heritage landmarks.

Lantern

The lighthouse is the symbol of the port city of Genoa, the totem landmark for the city. Today it is simply called the “Lantern”. It can be reached only by foot along a dedicated walkway that winds through the ancient fortifications.

Staglieno Cemetery

The Monumental Cemetery of Staglieno, located in the Bisagno valley and is one of Europe’s most important cemeteries. Opened in mid-nineteenth century, not only is it a sacred and memorial place, but a veritable open-air museum. Different styles, from Neoclassicism to Symbolism, to Liberty, combine harmoniously in extraordinary architectural and sculptural works.
